Invitation to stakeholders:
Fisheries and Oceans Canada is undertaking the completion of the designation of the Race Rocks Marine Protected Area.  You may be aware that a process to make Race Rocks Canada's first Marine Protected Area (MPA) began in 1999.  That process involved many stakeholders in the local area that represented the broad range of users of the Race Rocks marine area.  For various reasons that process was not completed.  However it is still the goal of Fisheries and Oceans Canada to establish the Marine Protected Area.  I'm happy to report the public consultations required for the designation will soon be underway.  The long-term viability of a protected area depends on public support for it.  DFO is working on the premise that with involvement comes understanding, with understanding comes public support and commitment.
An important part of any consultation process is having an efficient way of receiving advice.  To do this DFO will lead in the development of a Race Rocks Advisory Board.  The purpose of this board is to provide advice to DFO on the consultation and on issues and concerns that may develop as a result of the possible management actions that will be proposed in the designation of the MPA.  To be effective, this board will must have membership from the key stakeholders with interests in the marine area around Race Rocks along with representatives from the government agencies that have activities or responsibilities in the area.
The plan is to make contact with representatives of these stakeholder groups and to arrange one on one meetings to discuss their  interests in participating on the board and their interests in the Race Rocks marine area.   Once the individual representatives are confirmed, the board will hold its first meeting in September.  The process as presently planned will consist of two to four meetings of two to three hours in length between September and December.
