Maintenance

  • Ran the desal for awhile, tank is topped up, hopefully, no more running it for hours every day

Ecological

  • It looks like the female pup might have gone in today, if she didn’t then she was very close, I will check again tomorrow morning if the pups are in the water
  • the male pup has been beside the house all day, so I know he didn’t go in
  • still one other male elephant on island, Bernard, the alpha
  • closer to 200 sea lions today, maybe due to the nice weather we’ve been having, also a lot of harbour seals on the south rock
  • the number of gulls is slowly increasing, at least from the noise level it seems like it

  • The desal quit on me a couple of times last night so I’m trying for a longer run tonight

Ecological

  • The pups still have not gone into the water, haven’t even gone near the jetty, they are both still beside the main house, they have been chewing on the grass a bit
  • the pigeon guillemots are back, looks to be a couple hundred of them
  • still around 100 sea lions, and about 50 harbour seals all together on the surrounding rocks
  • there are about 16 geese which I’m sure are starting to look for good nesting spots, there is also an increase in seagulls, I can tell from how noisy they are

  • A couple of small tours from the college the past few days
  • there have been some ecotour boats out there as well

Maintenance

  • Lately, I’ve just been trying to get that water tank filled

Ecological

  • The pups still have not gone into the water at all other than day Nemo was in the puddle
  • the alpha is still here but no other males that I’ve seen
  • not very many sea lions, I would say around 100
  • quite a few geese, they will start nesting in a couple of weeks so I’m not looking forward to that
  • there has also been an increase in seagulls

Pigeon Guillemot

Weather

  • Water: Calm for the most part

Boats/Visitors

  • Guy and Alex came by today along with a couple visitors to collect the body of the deceased pup

Maintenance

  • I have barely scratched the surface with pressure washing, so much still needs to be done

Ecological

  • The third did not make it, it just never figured out how to nurse
  • the other two pups are doing great and are getting quite large
  • the pigeon guillemots are back, some of them even still have a bit of their winter plumage
  • still plenty of eagles around
  • will update census tomorrow and hopefully, the pigeons will still be around, sometimes they are here one day and gone the next and back the day after that, I would like to get some better close up photos of them

Pigeon Guillemots, winter plumage

Weather: mostly clear sky and light wind from the West.

Ecological: 

-A flock of Pigeon Guillemots with winter plumage (photos) were in the foreshore by the jetty, these were the first PGs I have seen on this shift.

-The Snow Bunting was out and about (photo)

Vessels: 2 tour boats and 1 private/sports fishing boat

Maintenance:

-cut firewood

-moved fuel barrels

-stocked up firewood in basement

-continued to look in to energy system issues.

Sooke Christmas Bird Count

Weather:  Continued west wind up to 30 knots in the morning and some lingering swell, sunshine for a change.

Ecological:

Guy brought Kim and Jim out in the morning for the annual “Sooke Christmas Bird Count”.  They surveyed the island and surrounding waters from the top of the tower and walked around the island. Guy took them around the reserve in the boat on the way back to get a better view of the pelagic zone.  Apparently the Snow Bunting they saw here was one of the highlights of the Sooke count this year.

-4 tankers passed by today: The STI Battery, and oil/chemical tanker on its way to Quintero, Chile; The Florida, an oil/chemical tanker heading to Anacortes from Nikiski (USA); The Unique Developer, and oil products tanker coming from Topolobampo (Mex) en route to Port Angeles; and the Valrossa, from Cherry Point to Manzanillo (Mex)

Vessel traffic

Weather: good visibility, light wind, overcast, calm sea

Vessels. After a couple fairly quiet days traffic increased today. Several of the boats appeared to be within 100 meters of sealions. A couple appeared to be going over the 7 knot speed limit within 400 meters of the rocks.

-1 Royal Canadian Marine Search and Rescue boat

-4 private/sports fishing boats

-2 rental boats from Peder Bay Marina. I called the Marina to let then know their rental boats were in the reserve and that one was quite close to marine mammals.

-4 tour boats

-Hyaku from Pearson College, Cory with 2 guests stopped in for a short tour on the island

  • Running the generator more lately as is there is less sunlight

Ecological

  • Slightly less sea lions than last week
  • 1 large male elephant seal, I’m hoping its the same one as last year because that one was very protective over the pups, and 1 much smaller male, no females that I can see but there have been a couple small ones coming and going
  • The large male does seem to have a gash in his back and many scars as well
  • haven’t really seen any neck banded sea lions lately, they might have left by now but I’m still keeping an eye out for them

Birds and Rescue Efforts

Weather

  • Water: Some swells this morning, now its more choppy but under a metre

Boats/Visitors

  • A team from DFO and the aquarium came out yesterday to try help out a couple of the neckbanded sea lions, the sea lions were uncooperative and left before the team got here, so hopefully next week the sea lions will be where we want them to be there is one here with fishing line around his head and it looks awful, i hope we can help him soon
  • An advisee group is here for the night with their advisor Clint
  • also the electrician came today, hopefully get that automatic start on the generator soon

Maintenance

  • Ran the desalinator a bit but its still not operating very well, makes less water in a longer amount of time
  • would like to do more pressure washing but need to be able to replace the water being used

Ecological

  • Sea lions are still slowly making their way out
  • There were quite a few oyster catchers around today
  • Ravens and eagles around as well
  • Also a single snow bunting has been hanging around

The Snow Goose

  • A few ecotours and fishing boats going by
  • Guy and a new Pearson Staff member came by today, gave him a tour and filled up on diesel

Maintenance

  • ran the generator and the desalinator, now that we had a good rainfall the cistern is filling up, hopefully start pressure washing more soon

Ecological

  • unfortunately still no elephant seals, they should be showing up any day now
  • the sea lions are starting to gather around the lighthouse more, need to back them up a bit a few times throughout the day
  • the little snow goose is still around
