  • Had a few ecotours and divers go by today, no visitors

Ecological

  • There has been a consistent number of bald eagles, cormorants and black oyster catchers the past few days.
  • Elephant seal pups and mother are doing well. Still hanging around very close to the main house.
  • A younger male started to approach the female today but Bernard (the dominant male elephant seal) was quick to assert his presence and drive the young bull off.
  • Been able to see Mount Baker very well the last few days with the sunshine and clear skies.

Ecological

  • Lots of black oyster catchers and cormorants out today
  • Two other male elephant seals are still hanging around the island, mostly been minding their own business and sleeping away from the pups and female.
  • Young female elephant seal with tag number C887 was by the jetty all day.

Ecological

  • The elephant seal family have been hanging around very close to the house lately, right in front of the door! They don’t seem to mind me coming and going and taking the odd picture too much though.

Eagles & Harbour Seals

Weather

  • Water: Calm

Boats/Visitors

  • a few eco tours went by today

Ecological

  • Large group of about 12 bald eagles on the south east rocks today, mostly juveniles without the white heads with 3 or 4 adults.
  • Around 10-12 harbour seals on the south east rocks as well with at least 1 small pup.

Other

  • Had a few small DND blasts go off today

Blasting and Pups

Weather

  • Visibility:15 Miles
  • Wind: 20-30 NW
  • Sky: Sunny with cloudy periods
  • Water: Very rough, 1-2 meter swells

Boats/Visitors

  • Very little boat traffic today

Ecological

  • The youngest elephant seal pup is doing well, staying close to mom with a large male sleeping close by for most of the day.
  • Saw a harbor lone seal on the east side of the island sunning itself.

Notes

  • I’m back at Race Rocks for the rest of this month. Very happy to be here again (:
  • A lot of DND blasting today. Every blast sends hundreds of birds into a frightened, flying frenzy and startles the sea lions off the rocks.

  • quite a few fishing boats went by

Ecological

  • Got a photo of the juvenile female on the east side of the island, her tail was tagged D-018, she seemed to be doing alright, no clear injuries
  • The younger pup seems to be cuddling up to both moms quite a bit, she tried to nurse off the other mom again, I didn’t catch her actually nursing off the other mom but included a photo of her trying
  • I suspect the new pup is female as well but I am not completely sure

Notes

  • quite a bit of the roofing came off the tank shed in the last big storm a couple days, I collected it and managed to get most of it in one spot

Surf Scoter

Weather

  • Visibility:10-15 Miles a fog bank came in for a bit this afternoon
  • Wind: 0-30 SW
  • Sky: Cloudy, foggy a bit of sun late afternoon
  • Water: Calm

Boats/Visitors

  • saw a helicopter go by, not many boats

Ecological

  • there is another female on the island, she looks very small, maybe a year old
  • the pups are interacting and the new pup is cozy with the other mom and thats fine with her but the moms get aggressive with each other sometimes
  • also there were some Surf Scoters in front of the jetty

Notes

  • DND was blasting  abit today, the fog horn was going for a bit, it was a sort of eventful day here
