  • Conducted the weekly census.

  • 9:34, 9:36, 10:07, 10:09, 10:38, 10:40, 11:14, 11:46, 11:48, 12:11, and 13:14.

Forecast: Wind increasing to westerly 5 to 15 near noon Thursday and to westerly 15 to 25 Thursday afternoon. Strong wind warning in effect.

Vessels in Ecological Reserve

Whale watching vessels: Fifteen observed working in Ecological Reserve (ER)

No other commercial operators, noted in Reserve today.

Sport fishing vessels: Five noted in Reserve today. None observed fishing in ER. One sport boat speeding through ER. One open run-about with a windshield was seen chasing a Humpback Whale and hopscotching with it in order to position itself in front of whale’s path.

Arrival of the Students!

  • 1 on Middle Rock.
  • I saw 6 cormorants today. Higher than most census counts these days.

Maintenance

  • Cleaned some windows this morning.
  • Cleaned the solar panels.
  • The students did more window cleaning after they had settled in.

Boats

  • Kyle and Guy brought out Maya, Tazi, and Ali to stay at Race Rocks until the 30th.
  • About a dozen eco-tours came by today.

Visitors

  • Maya, Tazi, and Ali are now staying in the Students’ House.
  • They will be of much help in the chore and social departments.

Black Oystercatcher Nest!

Ecological

  • Finally discovered a Black Oystercatcher nest!
  • 2 eggs are inside the “nest”.
  • Their nests are made of rocks and shells.
  • Census day.
  • I don’t seem to see any Black Turnstones or Surfbirds anymore.
  • Also less Bald Eagles.
  • And the Otter has been gone for a while.

Ecological

  • Got a better view of the tagged elephant seal today. The tag reads: 5086.
  • Apparently she was born at Año Nuevo in 2011, the daughter of G2234, an 8 year old born at Año Nuevo in 2003.
  • She was last documented at Race Rocks on April 22 2012.

Maintenance

  • Took out all the remaining Canada Thistle with the weed-eater.
  • Cleaned the solar panels.
  • Began painting.

Boats

  • A couple of small pleasure craft came by today.
  • One boat appeared to be only a few yards from the sea lions on South Rock.

  • I suspect that the high winds have kept away certain species of birds, making today’s list less impressive.

  • Always good to be reminded and educated on past and present issues.

Mid Month Shift Change

  • Sky: sunny with clouds

Ecological

  • There were 8 elephant seals on Great Race today.
  • In the afternoon, 5 of them headed down to the ramp for a dip, but none of them departed.
  • There seem to be less seagulls and cormorants than last time I was here.
  • By contrast, there seems to be more songbirds and ducks.

Maintenance

  • Everything seems to be in good order. Spent the afternoon unpacking and settling in.

Boats

  • Kyle picked up Anne around 10:00, and brought me out to Great Race around 11:00.
  • Saw one eco-tour in the reserve.
  • Several fishing boats out of the reserve.
  • A tug towing a large barge passed by the Rosedale Rock.
  • Another tug towing what looked to me like a pile driver passed to the north of the reserve.
