Otter Observations, Seagull Takeover!

Today’s Weather:

  • Sky Clear, blue (very foggy in morning and evening)
  • Visibility 10+ NM (less than 1 during fog)
  • Wind 10-20 knots W
  • Sea state: calm, slightly rippled

Marine Traffic/Visitors:

  • Yesterday Greg visited to drop off some supplies, as well as on Thursday
  • Less than 10 whale watching boats per day recently
  • Minimal pleasure craft activity and the regular stream of fishing vessels, and larger ships

Ecological Observations:

Due to amount of nesting birds and chicks, we’ve been going outside only when necessary as our presence seems to bother them quite a bit. Some of the windows facing the action have been getting, ahm… ‘fogged’ despite our efforts to collect rain water and scrub them when we can!

  • One of the two elephant seals molting has left the island, and the last pieces of skin are falling off in big dry pieces for the one remaining.
  • Seagull season is getting a bit violent: there are many deceased and dismembered seagull chicks around the island. We don’t usually see it happen, but we think that they are being killed by other adult seagulls protecting their territory and chicks.
  • While walking over the rocky area near the jetty to recover a significant amount of plastic that floated in, we noticed some pigeon guillemot eggs hidden in a rocky crevice! This is the first time that we have spotted a confirmed nest, although we had suspicions as we have been seeing them with fish and waiting for us to leave (before they carry it into their nest).
  • We found a pigeon guillemot near the jetty under camera five- it appeared to have been eaten by a bird of prey or perhaps an otter. It had been partially plucked of its feathers and eviscerated.
  • We’ve been noticing more harbour seal pups! We’re not sure if this is due to there being a increase in the total pups around, or we are seeing them closer than usual due to the low tides this week. We spot the pups with their mothers taking shelter from heavy currents in the more sheltered area between us and rosedale rock.
  • Yesterday we noticed that there were quite a few dead seagull chicks dragged underneath a diesel tank waiting for removal near the jetty/crane shed. We looked under the walkway where we often see the river otter duck through the rocks, and there were quite a few there as well. This explains the cacophony we sometimes hear at night!
  • We were contacted by an eco-tourism company who shared with us that they had spotted “ollie” the sea otter holding the body of a river otter. It sounds like he has been noted as particularly territorial before, so this is not a surprise, although this is the first time we have heard this during our time on Race Rocks.

We’ve been saving the fresh water that drains from the firehoses after pumping from Second Nature’s tank, and using it to fill the pressure washer tank. We can use this to mist the panels and scrub them by hand to remove the seagull waste that builds up so quickly this time of year. Every little bit of sun counts!

More goslings

Weather

  • Visibility: 15 Miles
  • Wind: 5-15 NW
  • Sky: Clear
  • Water: Flat

Boats/Visitors

  • A lot of tour boats around today in this beautiful weather, although not much traffic on those last couple windy days we had

Maintenance

  • A couple new goose nests popped up so those have been taken care of although there are about 3 nests that were too far along to addle and two of nests have hatched, the third one will hatch any day now and we expect that to be the last of the nests that will hatch this season

Ecological

  • My baby Nemo left this morning, it was definitely past the date we had expected him to leave elephant seals don’t typically stick around past 3 months of age but he had been here for almost 4 months, elephant seal pups also typically leave together when they are born in the same rookery but these two left weeks apart.
  • Still 12 elephant seals around going through the molting process, a couple of them have completed molting
  • the pigeon guillemots are here today
  • I heard there might be two otters out in the north kelp patch now but have not confirmed
  • Also saw a humpback yesterday, first one I’ve seen in a while

Goslings

Boats/Visitors

  • No visitors but quite a few tour boats

Maintenance

  • Just trying to fill up the water tank before guests come to stay in the guest house for a few nights

  • The eggs hatched a little sooner than planned, so I missed addling that nest, but the goslings are pretty cute, there are a total of 8 nests this year, as far as I have seen
  • still 13 elephant seals here, the male pup is still around too and most of the elephants have started molting

Rainy day

Weather

  • Visibility: 15 Miles
  • Wind: 0-10 NE
  • Sky: Overcast
  • Water: Flat

Boats/Visitors

  • No visitors but quite a few tour boats came to look at the otter in the north kelp bed

Maintenance

  • Its been very cloudy all day so I’ll run the generator and desalinator tonight

Ecological

  • still 13 elephants around, the male pup is still here
  • have to walk around with a broom because the geese can get pretty vicious when walking by
  • plenty of sea lions and harbour seals around and a lot of gulls
  • there has also been quite a bit of eagle activity, they like to chase the seagull’s around

Cameras are back up

Weather

  • Visibility: 15 Miles
  • Wind: 0-5 SE
  • Sky: Partly Cloudy
  • Water: Flat

Boats/Visitors

  • Had a few visitors this morning

Maintenance

  • as many of you noticed the cameras were down, that is because there was an issue without the router on Saturday, we just got replacement parts today and everything should be up running this also includes my internet which means I can post on this blog again

Ecological

  • A lot of elephant seals lately, there are 7 females and 4 males, this includes the pup
  • The males are very small, no big noses yet, they must be 2 or 3 years old, one of them has a green tag D018
  • the female pup left two days ago but the male pup is still here, he will probably leave any day now
  • only one of the females has been molting so far, the other 6 will probably start soon
  • I have counted 6 goose nests so far, I haven’t been able to addle them because I do need someone to help me fend off the geese while one takes the eggs. We do this is a population control method and have a permit to addle goose eggs

Molting

  • Visibility: 15 Miles
  • Wind: 10-20 NE
  • Sky: Overcast
  • Water: A little choppy

Boats/Visitors

  • a few boats out today
  • had someone out here to look at the desal, hopefully solving that issue soon

Maintenance

  • we’ve been getting a lot of solar but today is cloudy so I’ll run the generator and desal for a few hours

Ecological

  • the pups are having fun splashing around
  • there are 3 females altogether, one of them is quite young probably 2 or 3 years old the other two are much older and they will be molting soon, we should be expecting more females within the next couple weeks
  • no more male elephant seals around just the pup
  • not  a lot of sea lions but there are plenty of harbour seals on the outer rocks
  • I have not spotted any goose nests yet but I’m sure it’ll happen soon, not looking forward to that, looks to be at least 8 nesting pairs on island

  • the desalinator is running alright, I am running nightly at the moment

Ecological

  • the pups are doing great, they are now on the other side of the lighthouse by the sea lions
  • there are still currently five males and one little female who is molting right now

Molting Harbour Seal

Weather

  • Visibility: 15 miles
  • Wind: 25-30 knts W
  • Sky: Partly Cloudy
  • Water: Ripply

Boats/Visitors/Sightings

  • An average number of ecotour boats today – the tourists were treated with quite a spectacular sunset!

Marine Mammals

  • Saw a single California Sea Lion on the jetty early this afternoon – the only sea lion to be visible in the last 3 days.
  • Spotted a molting harbour seal near the jetty that seemed to be in a lot of pain. It’s unusual for harbour seals to come to the main island, but this one seemed to be trying to stay out of the water, possibly due to sensitive skin. I kept an eye on it for the evening, and went to check on it this morning but it was gone.

Very windy day

Weather

  • Visibility: 15 Miles
  • Wind: 20-30 knts W
  • Sky: Partly cloudy
  • Water: White caps, 1-2 meters
  • Some light showers during the afternoon

Boats/Visitors

  • Just a couple of ecotour boats today due to the strong wind.
  • Not much private boat traffic either

Birds

  • The seagulls have gotten noticeably more aggressive but still no signs of offspring

Marine Animals

  • There were four Elephant seals on the main island today – one male and three female. The male and one female seemed to occasionally get aggressive with each other, but no harm was done to either.
  • One of the females still seems to be undergoing the molting process.
  • Elephant Seal tagged B198 is still on the island and has been in the same spot over the last few days.

Overall, quite an uneventful day.

Beautiful day

Weather

  • Visibility: 15 Miles
  • Wind: 0-10 NW
  • Sky: Sunny
  • Water: Calm

Ecological

  • about 9 elephant seals around, all female, and all in the process of molting
  • the eagles were chasing around the seagulls today and there were quite a bit of pigeon guillemots around
