Technical Difficulties and Sea Lion Pups

  • Water: Swells about a metre in the morning then flat in the afternoon

Boats/Visitors

  • Guy came by and dropped off a friend and my food order
  • not much boat traffic, probably due to the fog, but there were a few

Maintenance

  • Fixed the fence, ran the desalinator and generator for awhile today, haven’t had much sun for the solar panels lately

Ecological

  • No elephant seals at the moment but there are plenty of sea lions around and a couple pups
  • There have been plenty of humpback whale sightings over the past week each morning and each night I would see a few go by just west of the island

  • DND was blasting today, the animals were not happy about it
  • 3 of the female elephant seals are tagged one was an orange tag reading T532, then two green tags reading D019 and B198

  • Sky: Partly Cloudy
  • Water: Choppy about 1 metre

Boats/Visitors

  • a few ecotours went by today
  • Guy, went by with a group from the college but it was too rough for them to tie up to the jetty

Ecological

  • 8 adult female elephant seals all together, 1 pup and the other pup still hasnt shown up
  • not much else going on, need to check the goose nests again soon, it looks like there is either more of them or the geese haved moved their nest

  • Had a couple tours today, people from the college visiting race rocks

Ecological

  • 6 adult female elephant seals in the front yeard, and one of the pups, the other pup still hasn’t been around I assume she is out hunting, hopefully she will turn up soon

Everyone in the water

  • Water: Calm this morning, waves in the afternoon 1-2 metres

Boats/Visitors

  • haven’t seen much boat activity but Guy did drop off a food order for me this morning

Ecological

  • the pups were playing together in the water this morning then came up to the front yard for awhile then all 5 female elephant seals went down to the water and they are there now

 

Kayakers

  • a few boats went by today, including ecotour, fishing boats and a couple kayakers

Ecological

  • All 5 female elephant seals are still doing good
  • there were plenty of harbour seals around
  • the geese will probably start nesting soon but I haven’t seen any clear nests yet
  • and saw a common merganser by the harlequinn ducks

  • Water: Calm in the morning really picked up in the afternoon 1-2 metres

  • a few boats went by this morning

Ecological

  • still the same 5 female elephant seals around, there was some movement with the pups, one of them was in the water for a bit this morning
