Good Evening
TEMPERATURE: Max. 13.0 C  Min. 7.3 C  Reset 11.1 C Rain 5.2 mm
MARINE LIFE: 2 Mature Bald Eagles today which tried many times to land on Gr. Race but thwarted at every attempt by the gulls and Oyster Catchers. With the great eyesight they have I’m sure the eagles have seen the 5 little tasty goslings running around. We look for the goslings every morning hoping to count 5! so far so good!
HUMAN INTERACTION: 3 Ecotour boats, 5 pleasure craft in the reserve today. The Second Nature in late afternoon with Laura, Garry and Marcus for a little filming.

enviro-systems field lab exam.

Monday, May 13, 2002
Good Evening
TEMPERATURE: Max. 15.1 C  Min. 7.9 C  Reset 7.9 C  Rain 1.0 mm
MARINE LIFE: 2 mature Bald Eagles -they moved from North Rocks to the Southeast Rocks ever ‘escorted’ by a group of gulls and often a couple of Black Oyster Catchers. There are still no hatched Oyster Catchers, maybe tomorrow. The 3 geese continue to graze the island often the the pair lets the loner within a couple of metres.A group of about 30 harbour seals are spending the day in the east bay area- they like diving into the swells. We see quite a few seals with scrapes that they get moving around on the rocks at low tide. The rocks are covered with thousands of barnacles, these flesh ‘gashing’ animals have very sharp shells – can’t imagine how the seals can get ‘comfortable’ stretched out on top of them but they do!
HUMAN INTERACTION:The Second Nature in ‘bright and early’. Unfortunately the weather was quite nasty this morning -not the greatest of conditions for the students to do their enviro-systems field lab exam.Usually this time of year the exam is a pleasant change from the classroom exams – even some time to relax in the sunshine and eat lunch, even a little socializing but not today strictly ‘business’ ! Late afternoon 3 ecotour boats- not a great day for boating!

Black Oyster Catchers, always the first to lay,

Thursday, May 02, 2002
Good Evening
TEMPERATURE: Max. 10.1 C Min. 7.1 C Reset 7.3 C
MARINE LIFE: 3 bald eagles, 1 juvenile- 3 geese still here. The birds are all actively courting, mating, nest building and in the case of the Black Oyster Catchers, always the first to lay, incubating and protecting their eggs from crows and otters. Now we stay as far away from nesting areas as necessary to prevent stressing the birds. If the birds are off the nests too long the eggs will cool down in the 35+ knt. winds.
HUMAN INTERACTION: The 2nd Nature in just before noon with Garry,Laura,Sylvia and students for field lab. Another successful but tricky low tide landing! The mornings start out somewhat promising then the wind picks up and even with the sun never gets much over 10 C

Good Evening
TEMPERATURE: Max. 10.3 C  Min 7.7 C  Reset 9.9 C
MARINE LIFE: 1 mature and 1 juvenile bald eagle, still the 3 geese. A few gulls have managed to gather bits of grass to build nests in spite of the wind, the never ending wind!.Will check the usual areas for more Oyster Catcher nests tomorrow if the winds abates somewhat. Don’t want to disturb any egg sitting especially since the temperatures are so unseasonably cold.Usually by the first of May the garden is 1/4 planted with the snow peas, green onions and radishes up.
HUMAN INTERACTION: 2 Ecotour boats today. 2nd Nature in with Garry, Laura and students for Enviro. systems field lab. The very low tide with the brisk westerly makes landing at the dock tricky to say the least-well done Laura!

MARINE LIFE: 2 mature and 1 juvenile bald eagles today looking a little bedraggled in the showers which were quite heavy at times. The 3 geese enjoyed the rain and the ensuing puddles.
HUMAN INTERACTION: 4 Ecotour boats and 1 Pleasure craft through the reserve today. The 2nd Nature was in with Garry, Laura and students for a field lab, unfortunately the rain put a damper on the scheduled outdoor webcast so as all good ‘producers’ Garry improvised.

Coast Guard helicopter landed one person to do some repairs in the tower

Wednesday, April 17, 2002
Good Evening
TEMPERATURE: Max. 13.0 º C »» Min. 4.9 ºC »» Reset 10.0 ºC »» Rain o.4 mm
MARINE LIFE: 1 immature bald eagle arrived at first light but flew off toward Whirl Bay just after 10:00.A little after 14:00, 1 mature Eagle flew overhead, landed on the most easterly point of the southeast rocks and is still there, no doubt near sunset it will make it’s ’rounds’ of Gr. Race and get the gulls agitated. The Harbour seals are gradually being floated off their haul-out spots as the tide rises. Most of them have been hauled out all day,and with dry fur, look like sun bleached logs scattered about the islands.Today was one of those spring days that you hate to see the sun go down, even with a colourful sunset!
HUMAN INTERACTION: 2 pleasure craft and 2 ecotour boats today. At 08:30 The Coast Guard helicopter landed one person to do some repairs in the tower ( fixing the rubber seal around the fog detector) The chopper returned 11:30 or so to return worker to Victoria Base. The 2nd Nature was in this morning with teachers and students for Bio. class. Finally, a nice day for an outdoor class.

TEMPERATURE: Max. 10.9 ºC »» Min. 6.7 ºC »» Reset 9.0 ºC »» Rain 0.4 mm
MARINE LIFE: 5 Bald Eagles – 2 mature. Still 3 pair of geese, a lot of ‘honking’ and a few displays of aggression, mostly neck waving and hissing. Things quieted down as the pairs went off to other areas of Gr. Race. The gulls continue to spend most of the day in and around nesting areas but leave at nightfall, many spending the night on the chopper pad.
HUMAN INTERACTION: 3 Pleasure craft through the MPA. This afternoon 2nd Nature was out with Garry and students to do a live web cast with the divers.

Gulls–starting to get territorial and this precipitates many fights

Tuesday, April 09, 2002
Good Evening
TEMPERATURE: Max 10.0 ºC »» Min. 6.1 ºC »» Reset 8.0 ºC »» Rain 3.6 mm
MARINE LIFE: 2 mature Bald Eagles today, the geese are still here, I am begining to wonder if they will nest here, usually by now they have moved inland. We hear the gulls morning, noon and night now. They are starting to get territorial and this precipitates many fights. As two gulls drag each other about the rest of them chime in with a lot of squawking, I can’t decide whether it’s encouragement or condemnation for such rowdy behavior,in any case it looks worse than it is and the results are usually no more than a few lost feathers. The Pigeon Guillemots continue to spent the morning ashore, taking flight en masse at the slightest hint of danger, they are very nervous birds and we take special care not to disturb them.
HUMAN INTERACTION: 6 ecotour boats and 2 pleasure craft through the MPA; 2 College boats with Garry,Chris and students for a dive – unfortunately there was a break in the interview cable so no live video.

elephant seals have both left the boat ramp

Wednesday, April 03, 2002
Good Evening
TEMPERATURE: Max. 11.9 ºC »» Min. 3.3 ºC »» Reset 9.3 ºC
MARINE LIFE: 2 mature Bald Eagles today, 1 arrived first light, the other after noon. The elephant seals have both left the boat ramp- very good timing as we needed to use the boat today. If today was an example of the weather for the rest of spring the cold and snow of a couple weeks ago was not so bad.
HUMAN INTERACTION: 2 ecotour boats and 3 pleasure craft. The 2nd Nature was in with 2 loads of fuel this morning; station boat made a return trip to Pedder Bay -mail and supplies- Garry was out this afternoon with some students(college boat)
